Mourning Ring
Gold mourning ring commemorating Thomas Wells (died 1811). It is presumed the deceased is a relation of Commander Thomas Wells (died 1825) as the ring entered the collection through a donor with family connections to Commander Wells.
The centre of the bezel of the ring is inscribed with the letters 'AEI'. Inscribed around the edge of the bezel are the words 'THOMAS WELLS OB. 10 APR. 1811 AE 46'. The exterior of the hoop is decorated with black enamel and is inscribed with the words 'E. CLAYTON DEC 1746 AE 51'.
It appears the ring is not related to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Wells (1759-1811), who died on 31 October 1811, aged, therefore, 51 or 52.
