Pocket watch in silver plated half-hunter case. Thirty hour duration, single train, ¾ plate frosted gilt brass, keyless movement with cylinder escapement. Plain brass three arm balance with blued-steel flat spiral balance spring. Balance and escape wheel pivot holes jewelled. Hand set pull-out piece between 4 and 5 o'clock. Flat white enamel dial with black Roman hour numerals and minute circle. Subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic 15 seconds marks and seconds circle. Blued-steel hands with blued-steel counter balanced seconds hand. Silver plated brass half-hunter case with plain pendant and bow. Front cover engraved with Roman numerals, in-filled with black enamel. The dome is engraved with the words 'Presented by A LADY ADMIRER OF COURAGE TO H. COMER. AGED 14 YEARS. APPRENTICE SEAMAN. AS A REWARD FOR HIS BRAVERY ON THE OCCASION OF A FIRE ON BOARD 'S. S. MARINO' IN MID ATLANTIC. 7TH OCTOBER, 1896'. Stamped incuse inside back and dome with '50'. Stamped incuse inside back with '89' and scratched with '1432'. Stamped incuse inside front cover with '50', '89' and '5'(?). Low convex glass over dial. The watch comes complete with a silver watch fob in the form of crossed branches surmounted by a scroll. Engraved on obverse are the words 'For Bravery on S.S. Marino at Sea Oct.10 1896'. Engraved on reverse is the name 'Horace Comer'. The watch is contained within a dark purple, leather covered rectangular presentation case with domed lid. The case is lined with purple velvet and satin. There is a watch retainer inside the base of the case. Printed inside the case lid in gold are the words 'MACKAY & CHISHOLM GOLDSMITHS 56 & 57. PRINCES STR EDINBURGH'. The seconds hand is oversized and probably a replacement. The presentation case appears to have once contained a smaller watch.
