Pocket watch in a silver pair case. 30-hour duration, single train, gilt brass, four pillar, fusee movement with verge escapement. Tompion style regulator on slide plate with silver regulating disc engraved 1 - 6, interspersed with arrowhead markers. Polished steel, three arm balance with flat spiral balance spring. Engraved and pierced balance cock with a grotesque mask. Engraved on the potence plate: 'Jn Abraham'. Convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, dot minute markers and Arabic five-minute numerals. Gilt metal beetle and poker hands. Silver pair case with silver pendant and stirrup bow. Case stamped with imitation case makers cameo mark 'W.M'. Bow stamped 'IP'. Outer case back and bezel engraved with a floral band and a central scroll monogram: 'JE'. The case bears several other stamps imitating hallmarks with makers cameo stamp 'WM'. Watchpaper of Darling, York. Other small, illegible marks scratched inside outer case. Convex glass over dial. The bow and hands are later replacements. The chain is 238 mm long, a length of 27, 10 mm diameter, 4.5 mm wide facteted gold belcher links, fitted with a sprung gold catch. The outer case back fitted with a single printed watch paper marked: 'Darling, 43 Coney Street, York'. The watch is thought to have belonged to John Elliot (1759-1834) and was worn by him while serving on board 'Resolution' during Cook's second voyage 1772-1775. The chain is marked JEW0225.1 and can be found via the Whole/Part toggle.
