Watch

Pocket watch in silver pair case. Thirty hour duration, single train, gilt brass, four pillar, capped fusee movement with verge escapement. Polished flat steel balance with flat spiral balance spring. Bosley regulator. Engraved balance cock with diamond endstone in blued-steel setting. Stop piece on contrate wheel operated through inner case at 4 o'clock. Barrel bridge engraved with the words 'RICHARD STORY London'. Potence plate engraved with 'AD 1826' and 'SLOW FAST'. Gilt brass cap. Flat white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, minute circle and diamond shaped quarter marks. Subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic ten seconds numerals and seconds circle. Gold spade and poker hands with blued-steel counterbalanced seconds hand. Silver pair case with oval section pendant and stirrup bow. Case hallmarked 'London 1826-1827' with makers incuse stamp mark 'S B' (Samuel Brooks (?), Ashby Street Clerkenwell). Pendant stamped with lion passant and date letter for 1825-1826. Both case backs engraved with the initials 'T.M.H.' Convex glass over dial. Outer case back fitted with four watch papers bearing the words 'W. Crawford, Scarborough (Jan. 1862). Spurge, Woolwich (Nov. 1842). Samuel Henry Leah, City Road, London. W.W. Tydeman, Adelaide St, Spanish Town (1848)'. The watch is said to have belonged to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839) and is said to have been given to him by Emma, Lady Hamilton (circa 1765-1815). The hallmark for 1826-1827, means that this association is false. Richard Story was probably the first owner of the watch. The engraving on the inner case is more worn than that on the outer, suggesting (as was sometimes practiced) that the owner wore the watch in its inner case only, to reduce weight in the pocket.
