No.1696

Watch in silver pair case. Thirty hour duration, single train, gilt brass, four pillar fusee movement with verge escapement. Polished steel balance with flat spiral balance spring. Pierced and engraved balance cock. Bosley type regulator, engraved with the words 'SLOW FAST'. Barrel bridge engraved with the words 'E Fear', PILL St GEORGE'. Potence plate engraved with 'No1696'. Slightly convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals, minute circle and diamond shaped quarter hour markers. Gold spade and poker hands. Convex bullseye glass over dial. Silver pair case hallmarked 'London 1839-1840' with makers incuse stamp 'I.H'. Stamped incuse with '1696'. Engraved on back of inner case with the name 'Capt. T.M.Hardy'. Scratched inside with 'U630C', '[monogram] 17UT', D.11.4.9.5.11.6', 'U836C', '71/4', '39390', '229' and '32845'(?). Some of these marks are barely legible. Engraved on the back of the outer case are the words 'Capt T. M. Hardy', '1798' and 'Vanguard', between two foul anchors. Oval section silver pendant with stirrup bow. Pendant stamped with Lion passant, the date letter for London 1839-1840 and the makers incuse mark 'I H'. The hour hand is a replacement. Thomas Masterman Hardy (1769-1839) replaced Captain Edward Berry (1768-1831), later Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Berry, as Nelson's flag Captain after the Battle of the Nile in 1798. As the watch has a later hallmark, this inscription that refers to Hardy is almost certainly dubious.
