Watch in silver hunter case. Thirty hour duration, single train, capped, gilt brass fusee movement with verge escapement. Polished steel three arm balance with flat spiral blued-steel balance spring. Engraved balance cock with grotesque mask and diamond endstone in a blued-steel setting. Boseley type regulator engraved with the words 'Slow' and 'Fast'. Engraved on the barrel bridge are the words 'Griffin & Adams, STRAND.' and '3185'. Stop piece acting on contrate wheel operating through bezel near 4 o'clock. Gilt brass cap. Flat, silver engine turned dial with applied, raised, polished yellow gold Roman hour numerals over matted chapter ring. Engine turned dial centre and subsidiary seconds dial. Blued-steel spade and poker hands with counter balanced seconds hand. Silver full hunter case, hallmarked 'London 1815-1816' with makers incuse stamp 'W J' (William Jasper (?) 5, King's Head Court, Gutter Lane). Stamped incuse inside dome with '7', '9' and 'C'. Scratched inside the dome with 'X323P528'. Engraved on the dome with the words 'As a small token of Gratitude of his great kindnefs to his dear Son The late Lieut: Robert Hood. R.N. This Watch is presented to John Hepburn by the Revd D. Hood of Bury. Lancashire'. Outer case back stamped inside incuse '2779' and 'C'. Silver pendant and plain bow. Illegible stamped marks on pendant. Convex glass over dial. The cap has been altered inside to give greater clearance for balance. John Hepburn was a member of Franklin's First Arctic Expedition, 1819-1822. During the return journey John Hepburn remained with the sick Robert Hood until Hood was murdered.
