Watch in gilt metal and simulated tortoiseshell pair case. Thirty hour duration, single train, gilt brass, four pillar fusee movement with verge escapement. Steel balance with blued-steel, flat spiral balance spring. Pierced and engraved balance cock. Tompion style regulator with a silver regulating disc engraved with the Arabic numerals 5-30. Engraved on potence plate with the words 'Thos Brown', 'Chester' and the number '130'. Convex white enamel dial with Arabic hour numerals and dot minute marks. Gold spade and poker hands. Gilt metal inner case stamped inside incuse 'C'. Engraved on back with the name 'Horatio Nelson' and date '1779'. Outer simulated tortoiseshell, covered gilt metal pair case with gilt metal pinwork decoration and gilt metal edges. Scratched inside with the words 'Blue Nours'(?), with further illegible scratched marks. Tall stepped pendant with stirrup bow. Convex bullseye glass over dial. The hands, pendant, bow and possibly the dial are later replacements. The case back is fitted with two pieces of pink paper packing and a pink silk. Marked '1773' in black ink. The inscription, which relates to Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) is thought to be dubious. Thomas Brown was a member of the Goldsmiths Company in 1773.
