Watch with silver pair case which belonged to Matthew Smith, a ropemaker from Woolwich. Thirty hour duration, single train, gilt brass four pillar capped fusee movement with verge escapement. Pierced and engraved balance cock depicting military musical instruments and a grotesque mask. Tompion style regulator on slide plate with silver regulating disc marked '5, 10, 15'. Engraved on cap and potence plate with the words 'Matthew Smith Ropemaker Woolwich 1805'. Low convex white enamel dial with Roman hour numerals and concentric alternate Arabic numerals for the calendar. The centre of the dial is painted with a depiction of a British man of war with 'Hope' standing at the shoreline resting on an anchor. Gold spade and poker hands with blued-steel calendar hand. Silver pair case both hallmarked 'London 1804-1805' with makers incuse stamp 'TB'. Scratched in back of outer case is the number '13734' and 'JAN810'. Four watch papers (three by Row of Alton and one other paper) and two silks, one printed depicting 'Hope' on the shoreline and the other embroidered with the monogram 'MS'. Tall round section pendant with a later replacement nickel stirrup bow. This watch is accessioned as JEW0256 and ZAA0266.
