Brooch

Oval, gold-coloured metal brooch, with a crown at the top and a rope twist border. The brooch is decorated with a gold foul anchor set on an enamelled navy blue background. Inscribed on a white bend are the letters 'RNFUSW', which stand for Royal Naval Friendly Union of Sailors Wives. This organisation was instituted in 1893, and was open to the wives of officers, warrant officers, petty officers or men of the Royal Navy or Marines. In 1905 objectives were stated as 'To encourage one another to maintain the dignity of their position, as wives of those who are serving their country afloat, more especially under the trying circumstances of long and frequent separation from their husbands; cheering each other by mutual sympathy. The Union does not offer pecuniary help, but is for friendly relation and mutual helpfulness.' 'Naval and Military Guide, Funds and Institutions' Colonel Sir James Gildea, London 1905.
