Sketchbook (France and Northern Spain)

This is a sketchbook from the tour down the French coast to northern Spain, 1851. Brown leatherette with pencil holder (7 3/8 x 10 1/4 ins) black leather spine; 25 ff. (7 x 10 in). Mostly blank but with a sketch of the medieval Tour de la Lanterne (lighthouse/prison) and the beach at La Rochelle (insc), two compositional sketches for pictures of La Rochelle from seaward (cf. ‘Outward Bound, La Rochelle’ in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool) and other slight sketches indicating date of 1851. Includes a separated pencil on pale grey-green paper sheet of a cutter-rigged vessel and a boat under a lighthouse and another building at the entrance to a harbour; inscribed very indistinctly l.l. 'Simbon' [?]. On the reverse of this are two very rough sketches vertically opposed which may be (i) a crowded guarda costa under a cliff, relating it to 'Guarda Costa off Fuentarrabia' (Proby Collection) and (ii) a sketch of the foreground bridge in 'The Siege of San Sebastian' (exh. RA 1855, now Somerleyton Hall). From the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). [PvdM 5.06]
