Sketchbook (compositional sketches for '"Victory" towed into Gibraltar')
Black leather spine, green leatherette with a pencil holder and button closure (5 1/4 x 10 1/4 ins), 37 ff., a number blank. Pencil sketches, some landscape but mostly early compositional ideas for ‘Victory towed into Gibraltar after Trafalgar’ (exh. RA 1853: now Somerleyton Hall) with nautical notes by Stanfield and a preliminary draft of the verse (which this clearly proves he wrote himself) that was finally appended to it as an epigraph in the RA catalogue on its exhibition. From the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). [PvdM 5.06]
