A religious quote:
'Hold fast this short and perfect word "Forsake all and thou shalt find all" relinquish desire and thou shalt find rest-/ Chap 32'. (CS was a devout Catholic in later life). This was probably a pocket book on his French and Spanish tour 1851, some of the subjects relate; it also appears to have been one he had with him when he attended the deathbed of his eldest daughter Mary (from his first marriage) at Auteuil, near Paris, in 1854. The reference to 'Burchet transparency' relates to the stained glass window commissioned at this time by Greenwich Hospital from the Government School of Design for the east end of the Painted Hall, Stanfield being Honorary Curator of the Naval Gallery there. This was installed in about 1855, is recorded in photographs, but was later removed in 20th century restoration of the Hall.
