Model of a two-handled bowl

Bowl with a flat outer base, two handles, a channelled rim and painted with a red/orange slip inside. ZBA4197 is another example, but broken. One of a group of 18 items of model cooking ware from the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acq. 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). Most are of low-fired terracotta and probably of southern Italian manufacture. It is not known whether they are standard toy items for children or made to order, but they were almost certainly purchased by Stanfield when in Italy, perhaps in 1838-39, since they appear to have been used for paintings deriving from his tour then as far south as Naples and its vicinity. Examples can be seen in the print of ‘The Kitchen of the Inn at Amalfi’, ZBA4170. The numbers of the whole group are ZBA4172, 4185, 4191-92, 4195, 4197, 4199, 4200-01, 4204-05, 4211-12, 4214-16 and 4252. [PvdM 6.05]
