Lieutenant Hubert Campion saw action in the Sea of Azof 1855 and was involved in the capture of Fort Pretovski. He served on the VESUVIUS throughout the Black Sea campaign. The VESUVIUS was the only ship to take part in the battle of Alma covering the attack of the French by shelling the Russians. He was Harbour Master at Balaclava until relieved by Admiral Boxer. Lt Campion took part in both Kertch expeditions and all operations in the Sea of Azoff during the latter part of which he commanded the ARDENT.
