Doll

A doll made from a corn husk and leaves. It has deerskin legs and wears a long black wool skirt decorated with beadwork and ribbon, black leggings also beaded, a pink cotton overdress secured with a square silver brooch and a black shawl. An associated label on a visiting card is printed 'Rev John Philip Gell, Buxted Rectory' with a hand written inscription, 'Papoose 1827. Brought home by Franklin from his second voyage to the Polar Sea, for his little daughter Eleanor Isabella'. John Franklin's homeward route in 1827 passed through Montreal, near the two Mohawk settlements at Kahnawake and Kanesatake.
