'The 'Endurance' in Heavy Pack, Weddell Sea, 1915'

Drawing, still in the original line-bordered mount, in which it was shown as no.8 of 22 in the exhibition 'Elephant Island, 1915-16 / Drawings by George Marston / Saved from the Wreck of the "Endurance" ' at the Grosvenor Gallery, London, in May 1922. The title given above is inscribed on the mount. A slip of paper written and signed in ink by George Marston is stuck lightly on the bottom left corner of the mount backing. It reads: 'The "Endurance" in heavy pack, / after the surface had been / broken & twisted by the winter / presssure. / (Recovered from the wreck.) G.Marston'.

As that indicates, the ship is seen in the left distance over jumbled pack-ice, with only the slightly raised bow, funnel and masts visible. There are still sails rigged but furled, except the fore-topsail, which is fully spread with a very light wind blowing from astern. In the left foreground a 'lead' in the ice shows calm open water. Although it expresses a fine 'open-air' light, the drawing was done (probably from pencil sketches) on the ship and close to the stove to prevent the watercolour freezing. It was one of very few Marston was able to take with him from it and is signed and dated , lower right, 'G Marston 15'.

The Grosvenor exhibition went on until at least September 1922 when this drawing was purchased on the 5th for 15 guineas (£15-15s) by Captain C.E. Parkes, who noted on the copy of the printed handlist that he preserved with it that at least two others had previously been bought, and the prices of all those still unsold as from 8 to 20 guineas. He also noted that eight of the drawings related to 'Endurance' in the Weddell Sea and the other 14, plus the 'Case for the Drawings' (item no. 23, unpriced) that Marston made up from 'old tents, dog harness, and part of a dog whip' originated later on Elephant Island. Parkes appears to have noted later in pencil the sale of no. 12 (8gns: 'Cloud Shadows on the Pack Ice', in the 'Endurance' group) and no. 21 (20 gns: 'Glacier, Storm Brewing, Elephant Island) and, at the bottom of the list in pencil, 'Had the entire collection been sold together the total price would only have been about £275 or £280'. Later notes by Parkes (in ballpoint, so possibly from the 1950s-60s) include his wish that the drawing be given to the Museum on his death. [PvdM 4/23]
