Powder flask
A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. A powder flask recovered by the Hall search expedition 1864-69. The brass cap is marked 'SYKES PATENT'. The item is marked with a Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich number (5). It was formerly displayed in the Franklin Room, case 4, number 5 and was presented to the museum in June 1892 by Miss Sophia Cracroft. The 1913 draft catalogue describes it as 'A powder flask obtained from the Esquimaux of Pelly Bay 1866 by Captain Hall.' Charles F. Hall was at Repulse Bay in July 1866, a group of Inuit from Pelly Bay were in the area at the time. The item is shown in a plate entitled: 'Relics found by Captain Hall in his recent Arctic exploring expedition.' published in Harper's Weekly in 1869.
