French fishing boats off Cap La Heve

Photograph of an oil painting. A photograph of Cooke's painting of this title, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, but which has subsequently been untraced for a long time. John Munday (formerly of NMM and the Cooke expert) states that this photograph is the first copy and image of it that he has seen, which suggests that even other such prints are rare. It bears a personal inscription in pencil by Cooke on its original card mount to his old friend and early mentor Clarkson Stanfield, dated April 1865 and presumably shortly after it was taken by Joubert of Notting Hill, London, who was an early photographer of works of art. From the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). [PvdM 5.06]
