Views from Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin 1848-9

A set of nine opaque ceramic panels painted in brown with scenes from the Franklin search expedition led by Sir James Clark Ross during 1848 and 1849 in HMS 'Enterprise' and 'Investigator'. The artist is Kate Kirkham, after drawings by W.H.Browne. The panels are mounted in a wooden frame made from the oak of HMS 'Victory'. Each tile is initialled K.K. (Kate Kirkman). Painted on reverse of tiles 1) N.E Cape of America & of Leopold Island. 2) The sledges arriving at the southern depot. 3) Remarkable appearance in the sky always opposite the sun. 4) Termination of the cliffs nr. Whaler Point, Port Leopold. 5) The Bivouac, Cape Seppings. 6) Noon in Winter, Pt Leopold by W.H. Browne Lt. RN, late of the HMS Enterprise. 7) Fiord Nr Uppernarvic, Expedition of Sir J.C. Ross in Search of Franklin, 1848 & 9. 8) Great Glacier Nr Uppenarvik. 9) The Devil's Thumb, ships boring and warping in the pack.
