Smock

Canvas smock with hood belonging to Sir Francis Leopold McClintock (1817-1907). The garment is hand-sewn and is painted on the reverse in black with a donkey with its head in a feeding bag. This was intended to help prevent snow blindness by giving the person behind a coloured image on which to focus. The garment has two breast pockets, one of which retains a horn button closure. There are two button holes at the neck opening, which retains one horn button. On an attached label: 'Duck jumper overall or snow repeller.' The overalls were worn over woollen garments to keep fine snow out.
