Medal commemorating Admiral Piet Hein (1578-1629) and the capture of the Spanish silver fleet off Matanzas, 1628. Obverse: A general view of the naval action. Legend: 'NON FERRO TANTVM HISPANVS QVANTVM VALET AVRO: AVRVM AVFER FERRO NON SVPEREBIT IBER' (The Spaniard is not so strong in steel as in gold; take his gold and he will not overcome by steel). Reverse: Inscription, 'INDICA CLASSE INTERCEPTA, PARTISQ. SINE SANGVINE OPVLENTISSIMIS SPOLIIS AD CVBAE PORTVM, HISPANORVM NVNC DAMNIS QVAM OLIM CAEDE, NOBILIOREM, FOEDERATAE BELGICO-GERMANIAE PROCERES E GAZA CAPTIVA MONVMENTVM CVDI FECERVNT. CIC DCXXIX. Cum Privil'. The inscription mentions the capture of the booty without bloodshed off Cuba, now more celebrated for its losses than its defeats, and states the medal was struck from treasure.
