Medal commemorating the Battle of the Four Days, 1666 and Admiral Cornelis Tromp (1607-76). Obverse: Bust of Admiral Tromp (three-quarter right), above two tritons holding a laurel wreath above his head. Trophies of arms behind. On a band beneath (incuse): 'CORNELIUS TROMP LUYT . ADMIRAAL . V . HOLL .' (C. Tromp, Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland). Legend (incuse): 'SOO BEELDT MEN TROMP HIER AF . DES AMSTELS ADMIRAAL . HY STEECKT DE ZEE IN BRANDT, GELYCK EEN BLIXEMSTRAAL . AO . 1666' (Thus we portray Tromp Admiral of Holland, who like the lightning set the sea in a blaze). Reverse: A naval engagement, starboard quarter view of two vessels in the foreground, a sunken wreck below. Legend: 'HIER STRYCKT HET BRITSCH GEWELT VOOR' NEDERLANT DE VLAGH DE ZEE HEEFT NOIT GEWAEGHT VAN ZULK EEN' ZWAEREN SLAGH' (Here the English forces strike their flag to the Dutch.
