Medal commemorating the Battle of the Four Days, 1666 and Admiral Cornelis Tromp (1607-76). Obverse: Bust of Admiral Tromp (three-quarter right), above two tritons holding a laurel wreath above his head. Trophies of arms behind. On a band beneath (incuse): 'CORNELIUS TROMP LUYT . ADMIRAAL . V . HOLL .' (C. Tromp, Lieutenant-Admiral of Holland). Legend (incuse): 'SOO BEELDT MEN TROMP HIER AF . DES AMSTELS ADMIRAAL . HY STEECKT DE ZEE IN BRANDT, GELYCK EEN BLIXEMSTRAAL . AO . 1666' (Thus we portray Tromp Admiral of Holland, who like the lightning set the sea in a blaze). Reverse: A naval engagement, starboard quarter view of two vessels in the foreground, a sunken wreck below. Legend: 'HIER STRYCKT HET BRITSCH GEWELT VOOR' NEDERLANT DE VLAGH DE ZEE HEEFT NOIT GEWAEGHT VAN ZULK EEN' ZWAEREN SLAGH' (Here the English forces strike their flag to the Dutch. Never did the sea resound with such a tremendous conflict).
