Pemmican chopper
A pemmican chopper used on the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-6, led by Captain George Nares.
The chopper is made up of an ash wooden shaft handle with an iron head. There is a hole in the handle for a leather strap. One side of the iron head is a small flat-head axe and the other side is a claw. The scale drawing relating to this chopper describes it "To be strong enough to chop open the strongest pemmican tins" and that it would weigh 1lb 8oz.
Marked with crossed flags with crown above and "RI" below. "NP" carved on handle (Possibly relates to N C Petersen, Inuit interpreter HMS Alert).
