Medal commemorating the Battle of the Four Days, 1666
Medal commemorating the Battle of the Four Days, 1666. Obverse: A general in Roman dress caressing a lion; he holds a sceptre to which is attached the shield of Amsterdam and a laurel wreath, a view of Amsterdam in the distance. Legend: 'Manhafticheyt beschermt het landt en leyt de bloetsucht aen den bant' (Valour protects the country, and overcomes the lust of blood). 1666' (When Munster yielded, and the ships of Charles fled Vander Wey had this silver medal made. Valour deserves the laurel crown; it tames the lion, devoid of justice and reason. The valour of citizens frees the State; but he who lacks courage is never a good soldier).
