Tin sheet-metal snow kettle and fearnought cover for a 9 pint kettle and stew pan
A cylindrical tin sheet-metal snow kettle with a fearnought cover attached to the rim on the bottom made for the British Arctic Expedition, 1875-76, led by Captain George Nares. The snow kettle has a hole in the centre to take the lid of the 9 pint kettle (AAA4006) when it is all packed together with the stew pan (AAA4004) before sledging. The snow kettle has a short spout and two hinged lidded openings to take the snow before it is melted over the cooking apparatus. The fearnought covering drapes down the side of the cooker to help retain the heat when in use. The 6 pint version of this cooking apparatus did not have the ring snow kettle at the top.
The scale drawing for this kettle and cover, and the rest of the '9 pint' cooking apparatus, is NPD3864.
