Medal commemorating the opening of the new harbour of Middelburg, 1817. Obverse: The Netherlands crowned, seated beneath a fruit tree, her shield and a crowned pedestal beside her, spilling a cornucopia (right); view of the distant city. Legend: 'ONDER ZIJNE SCHADUW HERLEEFT MIJNE WELVAART.' (Under its shade my prosperity revives.) Inscription (on pedestal): 'HEIL DES VOLKS.' Exergue: 'HULDE VAN MIDDELBURGS KOOPLIEDEN.' (Homage from the merchants of Middelburg). Reverse: Shipping entering the harbour. Legend: 'MIDDLEBURGS NIEUWE HAVEN.' (The new harbour of Middelburg). Exergue: 'BEGONNEN 1815, GEOPEND 1817 ONDER DE REGERING VAN WILLEM I, KONING DER NEDERLANDEN.' (Begun 1815. Opened 1817. During the reign of William I King of the Netherlands.)
