Medal commemorating the expedition to Vigo Bay, 1702. Obverse: Winged Victory crowning a trophy of arms and merchandise with a naval crown and branches of palm and laurel. Around are implements of war and barrels of treasure. Legend: 'SPES ET VIRES HOSTIUM FRACTAE.' (The hope and forces of the enemy broken.) Exergue: 'INCENSA GALLOR CLASSE . HISPAN . OPES AMERIC . INTERCEPT.' (The French fleet being burnt, the American treasure of Spain intercepted.) Reverse: Plan of Vigo harbour and forts, a fleet at the entrance (in perspective) setting ships on fire. Legend: 'ANGLORVM ET BATAVORVM VIRTVTE.' (By the valour of the English and Dutch). Exergue: 'AD VIGOS PORTE . GALLICIAE . 1702'. Inscription (on edge): 'DECIDIT IN CASSES PRAEDA PETITA MEOS. OVID.'
