Crimea War Medal 1854

Awarded to William Owen b. circa 1822. Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria with a diadem, hair tied in a knot (left). Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA'. Below '1854'. Reverse: Victory flying (right) crowning with a laurel wreath a Roman soldier standing (left) with shield and short sword. Inscription 'CRIMEA' (vertical, left). Medal suspended from a foliated bar and pale blue ribbon edged with yellow. Bar: 'SEBASTOPOL'. William Owen not on the medal roll for this action.

Mounted on a wooden block with five other medals marked ZBA4276-81 (two are detached from the ribbons). The block has been covered in purple velvet with blue velvet on the front upon which the medals are mounted. On the two longer sides of the block signal flags have been embroidered and on the back are more embroidered signal flags and 'W. Owen'. Detached from the wooden block is a small wooden plaque with 'William Owen RN served Her Majesty 39 years during which time he served in each of the above mentioned ships HMS Power[ful] (two ship names torn off)...Stromboli Prince Regent Prince Albert Royal George'.

Acquired with three certificates of service, two for William Owen (ZBA 4300 and ZBA4301) and one for John Owen (ZBA4302) and a photograph of William Owen wearing the medals (ZBA4299).
