Indo-Portuguese quilt
Quilted coverlet of salmon pink silk, with a shell pink reverse, produced in Goa.
Silk quilt of late-17th-century design with three decorative panels. The upper panel consists of three roundels, the outer two containing portraits. In the middle panel, a lute-player surrounded by animals and birds is flanked by two soldiers on horseback, each bearing a shield and a sword. The lower and largest panel shows a Mediterranean galleon, several lateen-rigged galleys, and stylised fish. A scrolling, foliate border surrounds three sides of the quilt and an arcaded frieze with figures completes the lower edge. Panels containing double-headed eagles are found in each corner. The eagles are an emblem of the Augustinian order.
