Medal commemorating the pirate Claus Störtzenbecher (died 1401). Obverse: Head of the pirate Claus Störtzenbecher in a feathered cap (right), doublet cut very low at the neck. Legend: 'CAPT . 1401.' Exergue: 'CLAVS . STORTZE BECHER.' Reverse: View of the city and harbour of Hamburg, a boat in the foreground. Legend: 'VIRTVTE PATRVM HAMBVRG.' (Through the valour of our fathers.) This was probably struck to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the famous pirate, who was hanged in 1401.
