Medal commemorating the foundation of the German Fleet, 1848. Obverse: Germany, crowned, with shield and spear, seated on a wharf with figures sculptured upon it (left), a trophy at her feet, pointing to a battleship (right), a fleet in the distance. Reverse: Inscription within a quarterfoil. Inscription: 'DIE DEUTSCHE FLOTTE EIN DENKMAL DER VOLSKRAFT UND REICHSEINHEIT GEGRÜNDET DURCH PARLAMENTSBESCHLUSS ZU FRANKFURT AM 14 JUN 1848.' (The German Fleet, a monument of national vigour and unity of Empire, founded by order of Parliament at Frankfurt.) Legend: 'SCHÜTZEND TRAGE SIE DEN DEUTSCHEN AAR ÜBER FERNE MEERE.' (May it [i.e. the Navy] carry the German eagle over distant seas and protect it.)
