Medal commemorating volunteers from Scandinavia, 1849. Obverse: Heimdal, the Norse god of light blowing his horn standing on the bridge of Heaven, sword in right hand, a cock crowing at his feet. Legend: 'NU STANDER STRIDEN UNDER IUTLAND.' (Now is there strife hard by Jutland.) Reverse: Two Norse warriors standing in a viking ship with a single sail. Legend: 'OG BØREN BLAESER DENNEM IND FOR DANMARK.' (And the fair wind blows them towards Denmark.) Exergue: 'TIL DE FRIVILLIGE FRA BRODERRIGERNE.' (To the volunteers from sister-lands.) In the Schleswig-Holstein war Denmark appealed for volunteers from Sweden and Norway.
