Naval reward medal commemorating the Battles of Svensksund and Friederickshamm, 1790
Naval reward medal commemorating the Battles of Svensksund and Friederickshamm, 1790. Obverse: Victory, a wreath in each hand, raised, standing on the bow of a two-masted galley, the Swedish flag flying and the Russian flag trailing in the water. Reverse: Inscription (within a laurel wreath and pearl border), '40 FIENTELIGE FARTYG ERÖFRADE DEN 15 MAII OCH 53 DEN 9 IULII 1790.' (40 hostile vessels captured on 15 May and 53 on 9 July 1790.) Fitted with a loop. This oval badge resting on the flukes of an anchor, inscribed (incuse) 'GUSTAF . III .' is believed to be unique, since no other has the anchor attachment, and probably was worn by the King himself.
