Medal commemorating Admiral Gustavus af Psilander (1669-1738)
Medal commemorating Admiral Gustavus af Psilander (1669-1738). Obverse: Bust of Admiral Psilander in long wig and uniform (right). Legend: 'GUST . A PSILANDER L . B . THALASSIARCHA.' Reverse: An antique galley, sail furled, sinking by the stern. Legend: 'SIDANT RES ANIMUS EMERGIT.' (Let his fortunes sink: his soul survives.) Exergue: 'INVICTUS ADVERSIS FATO CEDIDIT 1738.' (Unconquered by misfortune, he fell a victim to fate.) This presumably refers to his refusal to surrender in his 50-gun ship 'Oeland' to an English squadron in 1704.
