Counter commemorating Rhode Island relieved and evacuated, 1779. Obverse: Plan of Rhode Island with soldiers, ships and boats at sea. Legend: 'D'vlugtende AMERICAANEN van ROHDE YLAND Augt . 1778.' (The Americans fleeing from Rhode Island). Reverse: Starboard broadside view of Admiral Richard Howe's flagship. Legend: 'DE ADMIRAALS FLAG van ADMIRAAL HOWE 1779.' (The admiral's flag of Admiral Howe.) The token was made for distribution in the Netherlands as propaganda to dissuade the Dutch from joining the League of Armed Neutrality against the British blockade of North America.
