Medal commemorating the projected invasion of England, 1804
Medal commemorating the projected invasion of England, 1804. Obverse: Head of the Emperor Napoleon I (left). Reverse: Fortune in classical robes sitting in the stern of an antique vessel, her right at the helm, her left hand holding the foot of a sail, the wind fair; a star above. Legend: 'A LA FORTUNE CONSERVATRICE.' Exergue: 'L'AN 4 DE BONAPARTE.' The personification of Fortune refers to the luck that attended Napoleon during his first four years of government. The portrait on the obverse heightens the resemblance of Napoleon to the Emperor Augustus.
