Medal commemorating Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898) and the coffin-ships. Obverse: Bust of S. Plimsoll (left) beard, open coat. Legend: 'S. PLIMSOLL', 'HOUSE OF COMMONS 22 JULY 1875 LONDON.' Reverse: Port broadside view of a three-masted ship, partially dismasted, foundering. Exergue: 'COFFIN SHIP'. It was due to Samuel Plimsoll's services in the Parliament that the famous load-line recording his name was established. Fitted with a suspension loop.
