Counter commemorating the Battle of Cartagena, 1697
Counter commemorating the Battle of Cartagena, 1697. Obverse: Short bust of King Louis XIV in a long wig (right). Legend: 'LVDOVICVS MAGNVS REX.' Reverse: A trident, palm and laurel branch within a crown, the whole rising out of the sea; Cartagena (right) and a fleet (left) bombarding it. Legend: 'OMEN IMPERII MARITIMI.' (An augury of a maritime empire.) As in preceding, this probably commemorates the second capture of Cartagena. The first was in 1643.
