Counter commemorating a French treasure ship blown up in Hyères Bay, 1710
Counter commemorating a French treasure ship blown up in Hyères Bay, 1710. Obverse: Head of King Louis XIV (right). Legend: 'LUDOVICUS MAGNUS REX.' Exergue: 'COMITIA OCCITANIAE 1711'. Reverse: A ship under sail, lying outside a jetty; French sailors in flight on shore behind, English sailors swimmimg and in boats making for the ship. Legend: 'PULSIS HOSTIBUS'. Exergue: '1710'. This rare counter refers to Sir John Norris's attempt to capture a French vessel, laden with a valuable cargo, with the boats of the fleet. A magazine had, however, been laid by the French before escaping, and the ship blew up with the loss of many English lives.
