Medal commemorating the Battle of Cartagena, 1643. Obverse: Head of King Louis XIV as a child (right). Legend: 'LUD . XIIII . FR . ET NAV . REX CHRISTIANISS.' (Louis XIV, most Christian king of France and Navarre). Reverse: A trident within a crown decorated with palm and laurel rising out of the sea, Cartagena (right) and fleet (left) bombarding it. Legend: 'OMEN IMPERII MARITIMI.' (An augury of a maritime empire). Exergue: 'HISPANIS VICTIS AD CARTHAGINEM NOVAM M. DC . XLIII' (The Spanish defeated at New Carthage, 1643.)
