Medal commemorating the Battle of Cartagena, 1643. Obverse: Head of King Louis XIV as a child (right). Legend: 'LUDOVICUS XIIII . REX CHRISTIANISSIMUS.' Reverse: Neptune standing (centre), a trident in his left hand, his right hand crowning France, reclining, helmeted (left), leaning on a shield emblazoned with the three fleur-de-lis; Neptune's sea-car drawn by two horses (right). Legend: 'OMEN IMPERII MARITIMI.' (An augury of a maritime empire.) Exergue: 'HISPANIS VICTIS AD CARTHAGINEM NOVAM . IV SEPTEMBRIS . M . DC . XLIII.' (The Spanish defeated at New Carthage, 4 September 1643.) The artist Rog was employed to recut damaged dies of the period of Louis XIV.
