Shoes
A small pair of shoes (women's size), acquired by Petty Officer Daniel Warner Harley (1848-78), on the west coast of Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat). They resemble slippers and are made of dehaired seal skin sewn with sinew, and have inner seal skin liners with the hair next to the foot. A six-pointed star or flower motif is appliquéd on each toe made of diamond-shaped pieces of coloured skin sewn onto the shoes. The foot openings are surrounded by narrow bands of light coloured skin.
Harley was Captain of the Foretop on HMS 'Alert' during Nares' Arctic expedition in 1875 and as one of Markham's sledge crew achieved a record farthest north on 12 May 1876. He drowned in the foundering of 'Eurydice' in 1878. The Nares' expedition called at Lievely (Qeqertarsuaq) in July 1875 and sailed north calling at Prøven (Kangerssuatsiaq) later in the same month. It returned to this part of Greenland in late September and early October 1876 on the journey home.
