'LE CAPTAINE LARRET LAMALIGNIE VIEUX MARIN INTRÉPIDE LORSQU'IL APPRIT AU FORT DE MONTROUGE QUE LA FAMINE OBLIGE PARIS A SE RENDRE PRÉFÉRE LA MORT PLUTOT QUE DE QUITTER SON VIEUX CANON 29 FEV 1871.' (Captain Larret Lamalignie, a brave old sailor, as soon as he learnt at Fort Montrouge that famine compelled Paris to surrender, preferred death sooner than desert his old gun, 29 February 1871.)
