Medal commemorating the expedition of 'Boussole' and 'Astrolabe', frigates, 1785. Obverse: Bust of King Louis XVI in a tie-wig and coat, draped (left). Legend: 'LOUIS XVI . ROI DE FRANCE ET DE NAVARRE.' Reverse: Inscription within a laurel wreath tied with a bow, 'LES FREGATES DU ROI DE FRANCE LA BOUSSOLE ET L'ASTROLABE COMMANDÉES PAR M . M . DE LA PEROUSE ET DE LANGLE PARTIES DU PORT DE BREST EN JUIN 1785.' (This is stating that these two frigates, commanded by Comte de la Perouse and Cape de Langle, sailed from Brest in June 1785.) They were sent on an exploring expedition to the eastern coast of Asia. Both were lost with all hands near the New Hebrides.
