Naval and military reward medal
Naval and military reward medal. Obverse: Naval and military reward. Bust of the Duke of York (James II) in armour and mantle (right). Legend: 'IACOBVS . II . DEI . GRA . ANG . SCO . FRA . ET . HIB . REX.' Reverse: An antique trophy of a helmet, breastplate and tunic, etc., resting on a globe standing in the foreground of a naval action, a vessel sinking (right). Legend: 'GENVS . ANTIQVVM.' (An ancient race). Similar to MEC0872, except in regard to the legend on the obverse, which is on a raised band. These medals were prepared in haste before the dies of the new medal (MEC1123) were ready, which accounts for the band placed to cover over the earlier title when the King was Duke of York.
