Track of the Wansbeck from London to Sierra Leone, taken from the Captain's large chart

Manuscript chart in ink, outlined in watercolour, on thin board, showing the outline of the coast of southern England, Atlantic Europe and Africa. The chart shows the track and daily positions of the Wansbeck in May and June 1836. The Wansbeck left London on 13 May 1836 and arrived at Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 25 June 1836.

The chart was folded in three. An embossed stamp of the paper manufacturer is at top right.

The Wansbeck was a merchant ship, exporting a cargo mostly consisting of cotton and linen textiles, along with bottled beer and gunpowder. This chart was probably drawn by a passenger on the ship, perhaps a trader or government official.
