Grain, Wheat

From a bag of wheat left in Polaris bay (81 38'N) by C F Hall's 'Polaris' expedition of 1871. Recovered in 1876 by Nares' 1875-6 expedition. The wheat was sent to the Arctic by the Smithsonian Institute of Washington to ascertain the power of cereals to resist extremes of cold. Out of a small sample tried at Kew by Sir Joseph Hooker 62% germinated. The rest was returned to the Smithsonian Institute.
