Royal Naval uniform: pattern 1953
Aiguillettes are made of gold wire basket cord 1/4" thick, in two single plaits of unequal length and and of two cords of unequal length starting from the end of each plait; at the other end of each cord there are a few inches of plain cord ending in netted heads and gilt embossed metal tags. The longer plait and cord are joined to the shorter plait and cord by a metal clasp about 1 1/2" wide, with which the aiguillette is fastened to the shoulder strap. The longer of the back cords is looped up on the shorter or front cord, the front cord is short and long plaits fastened together; and where they are fastened together a small gold braid loop is fitted. The aiguillette is worn on the right shoulder, the arm being passed between the front or short plait and cord and the back or longer plait and cord... When the aiguillette is worn with the ceremonial day coat, the small gold braid loop is attached to the top button on the right side of the coat. When worn with the undress coat, the small braid loop is attached to a small button under the right lapel.
