Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) and the capture of Porto Bello, 1739. Obverse: Two full-length figures: Admiral Vernon (left), facing three-quarter right, sword in right hand, his left holding the right hand of Commodore Charles Brown, who faces three-quarter left. Between them: above, the Royal crown; below, a ship. Both figures wear hats. The words of the legend are placed in the spaces between portions of the figures and the edge. Legend: 'AD . V ERN ON . COM DOR BROWN'. Ns reversed. Exergue: Symmetrical scroll. Reverse: View of the port. Six ships, placed two and four, latter in independent line, all sailing to right. Spirepointing to letter l, two-gabled towers O.W. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'HE : TOOK : PORTO : BELLO : WITH : SIX : SHIPS : ONLY'. Exergue: 'NOV : 22 . 1739'. N's reversed.
