Medal commemorating Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), the capture of Porto Bello, 1739 and the attack on Cartagena, 1741. Obverse: Full-length figure of Vernon, wearing hat (left), facing to right; left hand extended, right receives the sword which 'DON BLASS', on left knee before Vernon, offers with his right hand, hat in extended left; ship (right), sailing to right. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'THE PRIDE OF SPAIN HUMBLED BY ADML VERNON.' Reverse: View of the Port. Six ships, placed one, two, three, all sailing to right. Boat with two figures in entrance. Tower pointing at first letter L tall steeple pointing at I. Line enclosing legend. Legend: 'HE TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY.' Exergue: 'NOV 22 1739'. Vernon bombarded Cartagena in 1740 and a disastrous attempt was made to capture the city in April 1741. On this occasion the Spanish commander Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta, successfully defended Cartagena against the British.
